Why the music?

At this time of the summer, as the start of the school year approaches, many parents wonder if they should enrol their children in music classes. They have heard about the benefits it provides and intuitively know that learning an instrument is an interesting complement to the school curriculum. But the benefits are much greater than we can imagine. (*)

  • Children who practice music have a more elaborate vocabulary and more advanced reading skills than their peers who do not participate in music lessons;
  • Music tones the brain. Research also shows that music is to the brain what exercise is to the human body;
  • Preschool children who practice music demonstrate a greater capacity for memorization and concentration than children who do not receive any musical training;
  • Children who study a musical instrument are more likely to excel in all their studies, to work better in a team, to persevere in their studies, and over time will have strengthened their critical thinking skills.

In my music lessons, in addition to teaching the essential elements of learning, I have been exploring improvisation and creativity in all its forms for several years. The benefits of improvisation as developed by Music For People (www.musicforpeople.org) are also numerous:

  • Promotes listening and communication
  • Awakens the sense of the game
  • Encourages risk-taking
  • Unravel the imagination
  • Develops the quality of presence
  • Brings a liberating effect
  • Open a window on the composition

For my part, to see everyone discover their own sound language, reveal themselves to themselves and become more alive delights me as a teacher. To see my students finish an improvisation with bright eyes, filled with pride to have expressed their souls in music is priceless.

This is why we enrol our children in music lessons: to give them the opportunity to discover great composers, to develop their different cognitive and intellectual abilities and even more, to give them a voice, their way.

Music, by its unifying side and because of its universal language, has the power to bring a little more peace to the world.

What if we get started?
